Beekeeping Supplies – What Are the Necessities?

Article by Mclean Dearth

Every beekeeper needs to have the right beekeeping supplies. Being fully equipped and fully knowledgeable makes a beekeeper safe, protected, and successful. Remember that the beekeeping hobby has a certain degree of danger and reducing the risks can only be done with the right beekeeping supplies and information.

To ensure one’s safety as beekeeper, one should wear protective clothing at all times. Buy a complete beekeeping suit: this includes a body suit, hat, veil, and gloves. Cover yourself at all times when dealing with your bees. The face should have maximum protection at all times because, obviously, it is the most vulnerable part to stings. The suit must be of full length, but at the same time lightweight to allow comfort and freedom of movement. Moreover, it should be durable enough to protect beekeepers from bee stings.

Food supplements for the bees are important to increase the bees’ productivity. Sugar syrup can be helpful, because it stimulates the female bees to lay more eggs. A feeder can be an important supply to feed the bees. These feeders are available in different types and are available in local markets.

A smoker is another important part of your beekeeping supplies. A smoker emits a kind of smoke that calms the bees. It is made of various gases such as twine, wood, and pine needles, but aerosol cans can be used for the same objective as well. The smoker is used to reduce the pheromones effect released by bees; causing the bees to become confused thinking that a fire has started in the hive. This will cause the bees to stop their defensive mechanisms, giving the beekeeper enough time to extract honey or inspect the hive.

Last but not least, a bee hive is the most important among other beekeeping supplies. This is where you will house your bee colony. There are 2 types of hives: the frame type and the top bar hive. The frame type is more popular because it is more practical. It consists of a box with lots of frames and a wax sheet where the bees deposit honey.
