Starting Beekeeping is a Honey of a Deal. So you are thinking about starting beekeeping. Is it because honey is sweeter, smoother and better when straight from a hive? Is it the fact that bees are just plain interesting? Is it the thought that it is cool to get your honey bears filled in your own backyard? Whatever your reason, beekeeping can be fun, gratifying and simple. It is true; there is nothing like honey that comes from your own backyard. Somehow, it tastes way better than store-bought honey. There are 200,000 beekeepers in the United States who think so. If they can do it, so can you.

Starting Beekeeping

Where you want your apiary site is one of the first things to consider when starting beekeeping. Choosing a good site will make your bees happy and will ensure a good honey production. Start by placing your hives at least three feet apart. Make sure they are easy to get to and are partly shaded. Your hives need good air flow for ventilation. Without this your bees are more likely to swarm when the weather gets hot and get sick when the weather turns cold. The site should also be within two miles of a foraging area. Crops, flowers or flowering trees will make for a happy bee colony. Make sure your site does not flood or receive runoff because this would be stressful, and possibly dangerous, to your bees. Also, keep in mind is that the path between your bees and their foraging area should not cross public areas because this might be upsetting to your neighbors.

Now you are ready to purchase all your equipment, food supplies and medicines. Talking to other beekeepers will help you with your purchasing decisions. Beekeepers are full of knowledge and can be your best friend when starting beekeeping. You can find books, magazines, blogs and classes to help as well. Finally, you are ready to order your bees, place them in your apiary and become a beekeeper. Soon you will be enjoying your own wonderful honey.
